About This Pattern
I’ve always loved crocheting baby blankets since I first picked up a crochet hook. I enjoy being able to finish a project in a short space of time, so I wanted to create a fun, quick and easy baby blanket to share with you all! You can make this quick and easy, switch it up blanket in 3 hours!

- Using Colour A
- Chain 53 plus 2 for turning (turning ch does not count as a st)
- Row 1: Htr in 3rd ch from hook and then in each ch across. Then turn your work. [53 sts]
- Row 2: Ch 2 (Counts as a st here and throughout). Htr in next st and then each st across. Then turn. [53 sts]
- Row 3-12: Repeat row 2.
- Finally, tie off colour A and then join colour B with ss.
- From this point forward you will be repeating row 2 using the indicated colour.
- Row 13-15: Colour B.
- Row 16-17: Colour A.
- Row 18: Colour B.
- Row 19: Colour A.
- Row 20-21: Colour B.
- Row 22-24: Colour A.
- Row 25-36: Colour B.
- Finally, tie off the yarn and then sew in the ends.

Hi Donna this would really depend on what yarn you use, the hook size and your tension, the best thing for you to do is to chain until it’s the size that you require 🙂
If you make this pattern wider, do you make more rows to make it longer? How would you both make it longer and wider? And how would I adjust the number of balls of yarn I’d need? First time crocheter here!
If you make it wider you would need to add more rows to keep the same dimensions; so you would just chain more to begin with and then keep adding rows until you’re happy with the size The amount of yarn is harder to gauge but if you wanted to make a blanket double the size, you would need twice the amount of yarn, for example. Hope this helps.
Hi – will any chunky yarn be suitable for this pattern with an 8 mm hook?
As long as you are using the hook size that’s stated on the band that comes with the yarn then it will be fine – usually for chunky yarn you would use a 6mm or 6.5mm hook
Beautiful blanket pattern! To make it larger does the foundation number of stitches have to be divisible by a certain number? For example: I Just finished a different blanket using US double crochet and it had to be divisible by 6. Thanks in advance.

Thank you so much, I’m so happy you find my tutorials helpful. I’ve not made this particular blanket using a foundation stitch instead of a normal chain, but I would make 53 stitches as in the normal pattern and then check the sizing.

You can do this in one colour if you wish, if you chain and measure until you reach the size you want and then continue from their 🙂

I am making this pattern now and because of the tutorials and how well the pattern was written my crochet is 100% better. My first afghan I ever made was all Wonky but this baby blanket is coming out perfectly.

I am slightly confused regarding rows 2 and 3. It looks like in the video for row 2, you are stitching through both loops of the chain, and then in row 3, it looks like you are stitching in only the top of the chain? Please advise which is correct. Thank you.
Hi Linda I think it’s not very clear in the video but I’m working through both loops of the chain in both rows I find this gives a neater finish but if you only work through one loop that would also be fine.

Hi Leonie Thank you so much If you wanted to work this same pattern but using three colours you can just change colour at the end of a row in the same way as you would do normally; if you need to you can take a look at my tutorial here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MaIuAWV2BA4&t=74s . I find it can help to make a rough sketch or drawing of the blanket beforehand – you don’t need to be good at drawing – to help visualise where you want each colour to be. Hope this helps!
Question: I create my chain of 53, adding two for turning, and when I go to create my first row of stitches I repeatedly end up one short (52). Any clue as to why this keeps happening?
Hi Gwen If you are sure that you’re chaining the correct amount, and are working into the correct chain to begin with, it sounds like you could be missing out one chain at some point. The stitch the blanket uses doesn’t actually have to be worked in a certain multiple however, so even if you are a stitch short you can continue and the pattern will work out fine

Hi Lisa I do have a beginners tutorial on how to make a half treble, which is the stitch used in this pattern; you can find the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PwT2_Vhue7w&t=577s If your blanket is curling up into a spiral that’s normal and will straighten out as you add more rows, but if it’s curving down into a rainbow shape it means your starting chain is too tight. To solve this you can go up a hook size for your chain stitches only. Hope this helps
how many chain stiches does it take to make a 10ft by 10ft blanket
This is a really difficult question to answer as it would depend on the type of yarn you are using, your hook size and your tension. Just chain until you get to your desired width 🙂

You don’t say what weight yarn you have, but 300g of DK yarn is enough to make a small baby blanket I would look at patterns that work in rounds such as a 12 point star, or a granny square as you can keep working these until you run out of yarn. You could also work a c2c pattern; just keep increasing until you have used half of the yarn before you begin the decrease. I also have lots of patterns for scarves and other garments on my blog if you don’t want to make a blanket

You can use whichever yarn you like as long as you use the corresponding hook, please be aware that the size will differ if you are using thinner yarn 🙂

You can use any yarn for this project, but bear in mind that for thinner yarns than the one shown, you will need to create a bigger starting chain (it can be in any multiple). It should state which hook size to use on your yarn, but for aran I would normally start with a 5mm

Hello, I have been following your tutorials over lock down and have fallen in love with crocheting! Are there any special instructions for washing this blanket, my yarn says hand wash only, apart from that do you have any advice for washing it? I don’t want to ruin it with its first wash. Thanks!
Hi Hannah I would just normally follow the instructions on the yarn label. If you are concerned maybe you could put it in a wash bag or pillowcase? 🙂

You’re welcome, I’m glad you find them helpful It won’t be a problem if you’ve been making your first stitch directly under the chain as long as you keep this consistent throughout the rest of the blanket. As you’re not counting the turning chain as a stitch in this case, you don’t need to work into the top of it on the subsequent row.
Where am I going wrong? If I don’t put a stitch into the bottom of the chain 2, I end up with 52 stitches. I definitely did 53 + 2 on the foundation chain. I can’t see that I’ve missed any stitches either

I’m really happy to hear that you like my video tutorials It’s very easy in this pattern to miss working into the top of the turning chain when you reach the end of the row – if you skip this you’ll end up a stitch short each time. You can loop a stitch marker through the top of the chain as you make it to help you locate where to put the stitch.
Hello! Found your video and absolutely love how it’s turning out! One problem I’m coming across is one side of my blanket turns out looking wider then the other and the edges don’t look straight even when I count the 53 each row… is there something I can do to resolve this? I just took apart most of it to try again 🙁
Hi Kayla I’m glad to hear you like it If you’re sure you have the correct number of stitches then this could be down to a tension issue – often once we relax into a project our tension also relaxes and becomes looser. The foundation chain is slightly rainbowing. I am currently on the 10th row and everything else is looking good. Is there a way to loosen my foundation chain without unraveling the entire thing?
You could try blocking the bottom of your blanket to see if you can stretch it out, but unfortunately it’s normally a case of starting again when this happens. If you go up a hook size for your foundation chain and then size back down, you can avoid it happening again
How can I even out the edges /sides of the blanket after finishing it?
Hi You could work a round of double crochet stitches (US single crochet) around the blanket which will make the sides look neat and tidy

Hello! I’m making the gauge swatch and it is coming out the wrong size but I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong. The 5 rows are measuring 4” high, but are measuring closer to 7” long with 9 sts. Do you have any suggestions for how I can adjust? I’m using Bernat Blanket yarn and 8mm hook.
Hi Kelsey, it can be tricky sometimes to meet the gauge exactly. This blanket can be worked in any multiple so you may want to adjust the number of stitches you’re chaining in the beginning so that it works up to the right size
