Houndstooth Cowl
pattern Notes
- Written in UK terms but switchable to US terms below.
- You will be working the cowl in a flat piece before using a join-as-you-go technique to join the short ends together to for the circle.
- When changing colours, you will do so by pulling through the new colour on the last yarn over of the last stitch.
- You will carry the non-working yarn across to save on yarn ends.

Gauge & Size
- Gauge: 13 stitches and 9 rows per 10cm X 10cm (4inch X 4Inch)
- Completed Size: 33cm (L) X 16.5cm (W) (13inch X 6.5inch) approx. when joined/folded.

Stitch(s): st(s)
Slip Stitch(s): ss(s): Insert hook, yarn over, pull through stitch and loop on hook.
Chain(s): ch(s): Yarn over, pull through loop on the hook.
Double Crochet(s): dc(s): Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have two loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.
Joining Double Crochet(s): Jdc(s): Insert hook into base of double crochet from row 1 and next st stitch of current row, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have two loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.
Treble Crochet(s): tr(s): Yarn over, insert into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have three loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.

You are viewing this pattern in UK terms.
With colour A, ch 31.
Row 1: Dc into 2nd chain from the hook (missed ch does not count as a st), tr in next st. *dc in next st, tr in next st; repeat from * across changing to colour B in the last st. Turn. <30 sts>
You will be carrying colour A as you work the next row.
Note: You will be working a dc into the tr from the previous row and a tr into the dc from the previous row.
Row 2: Ch 1 (does not count as st here or throughout), dc into the first st, tr in next st. *dc in next st, tr in next st; repeat from * across changing to colour A in the last st.
Row 3-70: Repeat row 2 alternating between colour A and colour B. You will end on colour A.
Fold short ends of work together to connect using a join-as-you-go method. you will be working your final row by joining to the foundation chain from row 1.
You can find assistance for the jdc on page 9.
Joining row: Ss into the base of the first st from row 1, tr in first dc, *jdc in next st, tr in next st; repeat from * to end. Ss in base of last st of row 1. Fasten off.
Sew in ends.
Repeat row one until you get to your desired size.
