Learn how to crochet this quick and easy baby beanie with my step by step written pattern and video tutorial. This beginner friendly crochet baby hat pattern is suitable for a newborn baby however the size of the hat can be adjusted by going up or down a hook size, dependant on what size beanie you want to make. In this blog post you will learn how to crochet a simple newborn baby beanie, this pattern is easily adjustable by changing your hook size. Tension is important in this project as you wouldn’t want the final round being too tight on a baby’s head so if you struggle with tension, CLICK HERE as this video might help! - Gauge/Finished Size: Finished newborn hat measures between 12-14” circumferences. Example piece is 6” diameter and 5” from crown to brim. Change hook size based on your tension to achieve the right size.

- Chain (ch): Yarn over, pull through one loop on hook
- Treble Crochet (tr(s): Yarn over, insert into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have three loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.
- Double Crochet (dc(s): Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have two loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.
- Slip Stitch (ss): Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull yarn through stitch and loop on hook

- Foundation chain: Ch 3, insert hook into first ch to make a sl st alternatively create a magic circle
- Round 1: Working into the center of the circle. Ch 2 (does not count as a stitch here or throughout), work 12 tr into centre of circle, ss to first st. (12 tr) Remember the beginning ch-2 does not count as a stitch, your slip stitch is into the first tr.
- Round 2: Ch 2, 2 tr into st at base of ch, 2 tr into each st around, join round with a ss to first st. (24 tr)
- Round 3: Ch 2, 2 tr into st at base of ch 2, tr into next st, *2 tr in next st, tr in next st; repeat from * around, ss to first st. (36 tr)
- Round 4: Ch 2, 2 tr in st at base of ch 2, tr in each of next 17 sts, 2 tr in next st, tr in each st to end, ss to first st. (38 tr) We increased by only 2 stitches in this round.
- Round 5-8: Ch 2, tr in st at base of ch 2, tr in each st around, ss to first st. (38 tr)

- Now take your tape measure and measure from crown to brim and see if it is close to 5”. We will add one more row, if you’re close to 5” (4.75”). If you’re much shorter than 4.5” you might want to add another round or 2 of treble crochet then proceed to the finishing round
- Finishing Round: Ch 1, working in between each st (not worked into the two loops at the top of the stitch, I am inserting the hook in the space between the posts of two different stitches), dc into every st around, ss into first st, ch 1. Cut off yarn with a tail of several inches
- Fasten off and sew in your ends
